NASCAR teams express doubt over charter deal being ‘very close’

NASCAR Cup Series teams reportedly express doubt over NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell’s comments that a charter agreement is “very close.”

NASCAR and the Cup Series team owners have been working on a new charter agreement, as the current one expires at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Recently, NASCAR Chief Operating Officier Steve O’Donnell said a deal is “very close,” which provided great optimism. However, that may not be the case in the teams’ eyes.

According to Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern, three people familiar with the teams’ thinking disagreed that a charter agreement was “very close” to happening. Also, one of those involved said there are significant issues that haven’t been solved yet. It’s unclear what issues still exist for the race teams throughout this process.

It is fascinating to watch the two sides discuss the charter agreement. NASCAR might believe that an agreement is really close, but the teams don’t appear to think the same. Hopefully, NASCAR and the team owners can work out the details of a charter agreement because a new deal is best for everyone involved.
