Regardless of the outcome regarding the debate between drafting for “need” vs. “best player available,” the Buffalo Bills might not be able to hold back in this Pro Football Focus scenario.
PFF’s latest 2023 NFL draft mock sees a stud wide receiver fall all the way down the board to Buffalo’s selection at No. 27 overall in Round 1.TCU’s Quentin Johnston is the player mocked to the Bills.
In this prediction, Johnston is surprisingly the fourth wideout off the board. Even in the breakdown of the selection by PFF, a “couldn’t pass it” up analysis was given:
This is one of those “we didn’t think he’d be there” picks. It may not be the most glaring need on the Bills roster, but Johnston gives the Bills a three-deep at receiver that can go toe-to-toe with the rest of the AFC.
Pre-draft, many NFL analysts and insiders have Johnston as their top-receiver prospect. Among those? Pro Football Focus itself. Still, in this projection, he falls.
If that happens, the Bills might run to podium.
Johnston’s talents alone are top-notch. But he’s also 6-foot-4, and he has the combination of size and speed which makes him a handful for defense to handle.
Johnston played a pivotal role during TCU’s excellent season in 2022. He had 60 catches for 1,069 yards and six touchdowns.
As a rookie, Johnston might have to play in the slot a bit more to get on the field more often alongside Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis… but that trio? And toss in tight end Dawson Knox? The Bills might never hand the ball off again.
