The San Antonio Spurs need to be aggressive this summer. They can’t afford to waste even a single year of Victor Wembanyama. What that aggressiveness will look like is a different question. It could be as simple as nailing their picks in the NBA Draft and signing guys in free agency, but the trade market could also be an option.
San Antonio has been linked to multiple names on the trade market. Adding playmaking to the mix should be a top priority, but if talent becomes available, regardless of position, the Spurs should take an interest. One guy who could be an intriguing fit would be Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen.
Nathaniel Holloway of Give Me Sport recently wrote a mock deal that would send Markkanen to San Antonio. Here’s the full outline of the trade:
Spurs receive: Lauri Markkanen
Jazz receive: Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, eighth overall pick in 2024 NBA Draft, 2025 first-round pick (via CHI), 2026 first-round pick, 2027 first-round pick
Adding Markkanen’s shooting and shot creation next to Wembanayam would seriously help the Spurs’ offense, but it seems unlikely that Utah wants to deal him.
