Penn State baseball history was made on Monday when junior catcher Matt Wood was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2022 MLB Draft. Wood was selected by the Brewers in the fourth round with the No. 132 overall pick, making him the highest-selected position player in Penn State program history.
“We are so fired up for Matt to realize his dream of playing professional baseball,” Penn State head coach Rob Cooper said in a released statement following the draft selection. “He has worked extremely hard to get this opportunity and now the real work begins. Congratulations Woody, the Brewers are getting a good one!”
Wood was a two-time All-Big Ten selection with 106 starts in 107 career games with Penn State. HE owned a .340 batting average with 132 hits, 26 doubles, four triples, and 16 home runs with 79 RBI and 81 runs scored. Wood is coming off a season in which he was named CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team and first-team All-Big Ten.

Former Penn State pitcher Drew O’Neil is still the Penn State program’s highest-selected draft pick in school history, going No. 120 overall to the Chicago White Sox in 2008. Wood is also the program’s 15th top-10 round selected in program history.
