In a game where the Spartans failed to hit a single three-point shot, Michigan State basketball still held a second half lead, but failed to capitalize on that and fell on the road to Illinois on Friday night, 75 to 66.
This was a frustrating game for MSU, who were able to control much of the game through the stellar play of A.J. Hoggard, who had 20 points on the night, and Tyson Walker, who added 14 of his own. Joey Hauser also added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
For Illinois, the 270-pound Dain Dainja was able to bully MSU in the paint, scoring 20 points on the night. Matthew Meyer also had an impressive showing, scoring 20 points and racking up 6 blocks. Terrence Shannon Jr. went off in the first half, but MSU was able to slow him down, but he still added 17.
Michigan State will have to forget about this one quickly, because they’ll have to play No. 3 Purdue on Monday.
