While the Wolverines have yet to get a five-star commitment that’s stuck under head coach Juwan Howard, there’s certainly been a shift in recruiting strategy under him.
Michigan had a five-star committed last cycle in Isaiah Todd, but when prospective fellow five-star Joshua Christopher committed to Arizona State after being a longtime perceived Michigan lean, Todd opted to go the NBA G-League route instead.
Nonetheless, under John Beilein, the Wolverines tended towards mid-four-stars and three-star recruits. But with Howard at the helm, more and more five-stars are paying attention to the maize and blue. Take Chet Holmgren, the Minnesota center who is 247Sports’ No. 1 player in the country in 2021 who put Michigan in his top group. Now, there’s another elite player who’s doing the same.
According to the 247Sports Composite, 2021 Dallas (TX) St. Mark’s small forward Harrison Ingram is the No. 13 player in the country, regardless of position. And on Saturday, he put Michigan in his Top 6, as he revealed on Twitter.

Naturally, with North Carolina in the mix, it’s a situation where Wolverines fans will remain leery. But he also has Purdue, Stanford and Harvard in his top group as well, showing that he’s serious about academics on top of basketball.
The interesting inclusion is Howard, an HBCU. There’s been talk of elite players looking towards the historically black colleges and universities, but we haven’t seen many choose schools outside of the traditional Division I/Power Five level.
