Michael Thomas was Giants’ highest-graded special teamer in 2019

Safety Michael Thomas finished the 2019 regular season as the New York Giants’ highest-graded special teamer.

The New York Giants suffered through another down year in 2019, but there were a few areas of promise and optimism. Several rookies played exceptionally well and appear to have a bright future, their defensive line excelled and their special teams unit was sound (save for kicker Aldrick Rosas).

That unit was led by veteran safety Michael Thomas, who not only dominated on specials, but made a few big plays defensively as well.

While Thomas did not receive any recognition for his defensive prowess in 2019, he did receive recognition for his special teams play courtesy of Pro Football Focus, finishing the year as the Giants’ highest-graded specialist.

Thomas welcomed the news.

Thomas’ contract with the Giants will expire this offseason and he will officially become an unrestricted free agent, but given the team’s need for veteran leadership (especially in the secondary) and talent on specials, don’t be surprised to see general manager Dave Gettleman work to get him back in 2020.
