On a day where Georgetown hired a head coach to fill its vacancy, another trendy name on the [autotag]Micah Shrewsbery[/autotag] rumor radar is reportedly in some level of talks with Penn State’s head coach. And it’s a notable one.
According to David Jones of The Patriot-News, Shrewsberry is in talks with Notre Dame, and it is believed Penn State has made its sales pitch to its head coach. What happens next, whatever it may be, could be about to go down.
“What is going to happen, stay or go, will happen soon,” Jones said, via Twitter.
Notre Dame is arguably the biggest threat to lure Shrewsberry away from Notre Dame for a handful of reasons. While Penn State should not be in a position to lose a money battle with a program like Providence, Notre Dame is just the kind of program with pockets deep enough not just to finance Shrewsberry as a head coach, but provide for a well-funded coaching staff and facilities. It also packs a basketball pedigree that Penn State just doesn’t measure up to at this point in time, historically.
Shrewsberry is a trendy name in this round of the coaching carousel after taking Penn State to the NCAA Basketball Tournament and an appearance in the Big Ten championship game in just his second year on the job. Shrewsberry remade Penn State’s roster with strong use of the transfer portal and his recruiting efforts have helped to pave a path toward future stability for the basketball program.
It is unknown if Shrewsberry is seriously considering leaving Penn State for another job, specifically the Notre Dame one, at this point, but he has not publicly committed without any doubt he will remain in Happy Valley. This could be a serious opportunity Shrewsberry is contemplating, or it could all be a final chess move to get a better contract with more financial commitment to the entire program from Penn State.
Am told by reliable source, Micah Shrewsberry now in talks with Notre Dame. I believe Penn State made its pitch. Whatever is going to happen, stay or go, will happen soon.
