Meet this season’s Auburn Regional participants

Auburn baseball will welcome Southern Miss, Samford, and Penn to Plainsman Park this weekend for what is sure to be a great regional.

Auburn learned Sunday that it would host a regional for the second straight season.  On Monday, the Tigers learned who they would play as they begin a quest for its third trip to the College World Series in its last four tries.

Auburn secured the No. 13 seed for this season’s tournament and will be paired with No. 4 seed Clemson. Each of these regionals provides excellent teams, so it will be interesting to see how these regionals shake out.

As for Auburn’s side of the regional, the Tigers will face Sun Belt champion Southern Miss, Southern Conference champion Samford, and Ivy League champion Penn as part of its regional. The biggest draw of the regional is Southern Miss, who ended the regular season as the No. 21 team in the RPI and was on the cusp of earning a host bid.

The No. 3 seed of the regional, Samford, is a team that Auburn is already familiar with. The Tigers defeated Samford at Plainsman Park on April 18 by a score of 13-3 in eight innings.

Finally, Auburn’s first opponent of the weekend will be the Penn Quakers, winners of the first-ever Ivy League tournament.
