The name is none other than former special teams and tight ends coach for the Longhorns, Jeff Traylor. He is currently the head coach at UT-San Antonio. Not the sexy name going around but let’s look at a couple reasons why they should consider him.
He is familiar with the program
Traylor first came to Texas after 15 years as a high school head coach in his hometown of Gilmer, Texas. He served on the staff in the final two years of the Charlie Strong era. During that time he helped out the school finish with back-to-back No. 7 recruiting classes. He was also named Big 12 Recruiter of the year. In his time at Texas, he helped land Brandon Jones, Zach Shackelford, and Devin Duvernay.
In the last two years under Herman, recruiting has suffered a bit with a mass exodus of the 2021 class ahead of signing day.
He also was the key to helping turning the tide back in UT’s favor with many in-state recruits. – Scout on Traylor’s impact in recruiting.
With his East Texas ties, Traylor would help them find many of those talented players and bring them to the Forty Acres.
Offensive line play would improve
One of the big reasons for the Longhorns offensive line play is their coaching. Under Herb Hand the team hasn’t improved up front and that is something that was evident during his time at Auburn. Not to mention, he isn’t recruiting top talent after losing out of the legacy twins, Savion Byrd, and the list goes on. Herb Hand needs to exit stage left.
The Longhorns haven’t had a top offensive line or a top running game since 2016. The final year that Matt Mattox was in Austin. He is now at UTSA with Traylor. Under Mattox, Connor Williams was an All-American offensive tackle and D’Onta Foreman ran wild. Bringing back Traylor could also land Mattox to take over the offensive line and likely run game coordinator.
