Matthew Stafford will experience a lot of “firsts” with his new team in 2021. He’ll play his first game at SoFi Stadium, he’ll play his first 17-game season and hopefully, he’ll win his first playoff game.

But in Week 7, he’ll do something he never has before: face a former team. The Los Angeles Rams will host the Detroit Lions on Oct. 24, which will make the first time Stafford plays against the team he spent 12 years with.

Stafford appeared on NFL Network’s schedule release show Wednesday night and he was asked what it’ll be like to go up against the Lions in Week 7.

“It’ll be different. It’s something I’ve obviously never experienced,” he said. “I played for the same franchise for 12 years so this will be a new one for me. Obviously, a bunch of great friends and on the other side of the ball, an organization I care a lot about. But that weekend I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure that we come out on top.”

With the Lions, Stafford threw 282 touchdown passes, racked up 45,109 yards and won 74 games. He’s played against every team in the NFL at least twice, but he’s never faced the Lions.

Despite the franchise holding a special place in his heart, he’s going to do what he can to help the Rams win that game and continue their push to the postseason, where he’ll hopefully clinch his first playoff victory in the NFL.
