Matt Prater set NFL record this season

He has the most 55-yard or longer field goals in a season in NFL history.

The Arizona Cardinals have not had many bright spots to the season but one has been the performance of kicker Matt Prater. He has set an NFL record this season, as AZCardinals.com’s Darren Urban wrote.

Prater made a 55-yard field goal on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. It was his sixth made field goal from at least 55 yards, giving him the record.

Prater set the record once in 2017 when he made four.

Since then, three players — Jason Myers in 2018 for the Jets and Daniel Carlson for the Raiders and Matt Gay for the Rams last season — hit five from 55 yards or longer in a season.

With two games to go, he could extend that record and he could set a new record for the most made field goals from 50 yards or longer. He is 9-for-11 from that range this season. The record is 11.

Overall, Prater has made 24-of-27 field goals. Two of his three misses this season are from 55 and 56 yards. He has converted on 17-of-18 extra points.

In a season where it seems possible no Cardinals player will make the Pro Bowl, Prater might be the most deserving on the team.
