For the Philadelphia 76ers to be the title contender that they expect themselves to be, they will have to receive contributions from everybody on their roster. That means from their star duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons down the roster to guys like Matisse Thybulle.
The second-year guard out of Washington is having another terrific season on the defensive end of the floor. He has really made a case for himself to be named to one of the All-Defensive Teams as he has made a big impact on that end in his bench role.
Coming into the season, everybody knew about his defense. The big question was his offense and what he can contribute to that end of the floor. He got off to a tough start shooting just 29.6% from deep before the All-Star break, but since the break, he is shooting 37.0% from deep.
“I think my role offensively has more or less stayed the same,” said Thybulle. “I think, over the course of the season, I started to shoot a little bit more consistently and just looking for times to get straight-line drives to the hoop or just get out in transition.”
Thybulle did get off to a tough start to the 2020-21 season. He was dealing with an injury in training camp in December and that set him back a bit. He only played sparingly at the beginning part of the season due to that injury and that could have caused the slow start.
Now, under the guidance of Doc Rivers, Thybulle has now gotten into a rhythm and is ready to help the team on the offensive end even more as he is now in a rhythm.
“I think so,” he added. “I think it just took me some time to get comfortable out there. The beginning of the season was weird, a little rocky for me, but post All-Star I felt a lot more comfortable and more confident.”
Thybulle is averaging just 4.7 points since the break and that won’t jump off the page, but he does not have to score that much on this team. As long as he continues to knock down the open looks from deep, that is what is going to help the team going forward.
“More or less, I think we’ve got enough big guns on offense to where my job out there is just to try and compliment them as best I can,” he finished.
