Mathew Judon weighs in on the Patriots’ QB competition

“If you’re not playing to a certain standard, it’s the next man up. I think he’ll be playing to that standard, but it’s yet to see.”

New England Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon will spend no shortage of time matched up against his team’s QB1 in practices during the 2021 season. There’s no doubt Judon will be a huge part of the team’s defense. But it’s unclear which quarterback will win the starting job: Cam Newton, Mac Jones, Jarrett Stidham or even Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots’ position battle at quarterback is one of the most interesting competitions in the NFL during training camp. During an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Judon fielded a question about Newton and the quarterback competition.

“He’s not new to this. He’s not new to the NFL, and we all know how it goes,” Judon said on Monday morning. “If you’re not playing to a certain standard, it’s the next man up. I think he’ll be playing to that standard, but it’s yet to see.”

Newton and Jones, in particular, are the leading candidates for the Patriots’ quarterback gig. It’s anyone’s guess which players will emerge for Week 1 — or whether he will be able to hold the job for the entire season.
