Mack Brown says assistants will be ‘really, really honest’ with players ahead of transfer portal

UNC football head coach Mack Brown spoke on the upcoming transfer portal window.

Spring practice is officially in the books for the UNC football program following the completion of the annual spring game. With a few more months left until the 2023 season, the next big event is the transfer portal.

The next window for the transfer portal opened up on Saturday and it’s expected to be another busy period across the country. That could be the case for the North Carolina Tar Heels and head coach Mack Brown didn’t shy away from talking about the portal.

Following Saturday’s spring game, Brown mentioned the transfer portal in his opening statement. Brown gave a brutally honest quote about his staff being honest with players and their roles this week.

“I’ve told our coaches to be really, really honest with them and we’ll go over that for a couple hours on Monday to make sure that we’re all on the same page,” Brown said. “So I don’t know if anybody will go in the portal. But if they do, we’ll be very supportive of it and try to help them. And I think that’s just the new way to do it and we will work really, really hard to make sure that they get placed.”

Later on in the interview, UNC media asked Brown about the portal and if the Tar Heels will be active.  He revealed that the team is always looking for offensive linemen.

“Yeah, that’ll be Monday,” Brown said. “We’ll talk about it hard after we look at this. You’re always looking for offensive linemen. It’s the hardest thing, probably quarterback and offensive lineman, the two hardest things to hit on in recruiting. You make more mistakes with both.”

The Tar Heels might lose a few players and could be involved with others in the portal. Nothing should be really shocking at this point, especially with what we have seen with the portal so far.

But it does feel like the Tar Heels are happy with the group that they have as it stands.
