Macaw wants soccer to have more macaws

Let the bird play you cowards!

Soccer doesn’t have enough macaws.

That’s the opinion of a macaw that put its theory into practice, interrupting a Liga Revelação match between Estoril Praia and Estrela da Amadora. Early in the second half at Estadio António Coimbra da Mota, the macaw landed on the pitch and just decided to hang out for a bit, so that we could see how soccer looks when it has macaws.

FIFA has not yet adopted the macaw’s “involve macaws in soccer games” concept — you know how it is with IFAB, it always takes a long time — but the experiment appears to have some merits.

First of all, check out this macaw! It’s on the soccer field! Here’s Estoril’s Ivan Pavlic making sure everyone sees the macaw.

Thanks for the help Ivan.

Is there something in a macaw choosing Portugal as the place to make its debut? On one hand, it’s a little strange that this particular macaw, a blue-and-yellow, is in Portugal. These are birds that naturally reside in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, and Peru. However, their popularity as pets probably explains how this particular macaw ended up in this particular game.

It’s also worth noting that Portugal is the home to Clube Desportivo das Aves, which if you want to get very literal, translates into English as “Bird Sports Club.” Hopefully this macaw can find Aves, the most natural supporter for the macaws in soccer movement.

Unfortunately, until IFAB approves macaws in soccer, the referees had to call a stop to the game until this particular macaw left the pitch.

That lead to some miscommunication. An Estrela staffer appeared to think the issue at hand was just that the macaw wanted a blazer. A kind gesture, but definitely wrong: macaws do not want blazers, which are not compatible with wings.

Another onlooker felt that the issue wasn’t that macaws struggle to wear jackets, but rather that navy blue was the wrong color. He brought a slate gray blazer into the fray, but remember: macaws do not wear blazers. Their plumage is enough, adding a tailored jacket isn’t going to make them more presentable.

To make sure that witnesses understood that this was about getting macaws involved in soccer and not about blazer color choices, the macaw flew in a loop out toward the endline, then swooping back the other way towards midfield.

At some point play continued, with Estrela taking a 1-0 win and tightening the Liga Revelação’s championship round significantly. Pro Soccer Wire will keep close watch on IFAB’s statements on the macaws in soccer matter.

Macaw on the field!
