The USC Trojans haven’t won a College World Series in 25 years, but they were so dominant in their dynastic period from 1958-1978 that they accumulated far more national championships than any other baseball program.
When Texas won its fourth College World Series in 1983, the Longhorns were still seven titles behind the Trojans, 11-4.
When LSU won its first College World Series in 1991, the Tigers trailed USC 11-1 in national titles.
It took Texas 22 years — from 1983 to 2005 — to finally reach six national championships, half the amount of trophies on USC’s shelf in Heritage Hall.
LSU won a very impressive five national titles in 17 years (1993-2009) to reach the six-championship mark and join Texas in second place on the all-time list.
Since 2009, however, neither the Longhorns nor Tigers had been able to reach an elusive seventh CWS championship.
That changed Monday night in Omaha. LSU beat Florida, 18-4, in the third and deciding game of the CWS finals to lift a seventh national championship trophy. LSU broke the second-place tie with Texas and now stands alone in second behind USC on the all-time list.
LSU becomes the second Division I baseball program to claim seven national titles.
LSU Tigers Wire noted how this championship was a team effort:
“Thatcher Hurd pitched a gem on the mound as the Tigers didn’t even ultimately need Paul Skenes, and Tre Morgan, Brayden Jobert, Dylan Crews and Tommy White all came in clutch on offense, recording three-plus hits each.”
