LSU remains atop On3’s SEC power rankings after other top teams struggled this weekend

The Tigers took care of business on the road in Oxford with a sweep over Ole Miss.

It was not a good week for many of the top teams in the SEC.

Florida and Vanderbilt suffered weekend sweeps on the road against South Carolina and Tennessee, respectively. It was an especially tough week for the Commodores, who also suffered a midweek loss to Indiana State before a tough weekend against an unranked Vols team.

Arkansas was also swept over the weekend in a stunning loss to Georgia, which suddenly finds itself squarely in the postseason conversation.

It looked like LSU could be setting up for a similar disappointing weekend after the Tigers lost their first midweek game of the year to Louisiana on Tuesday. But despite some shaky pitching, where injuries are straining the depth, LSU earned a road sweep over Ole Miss and remains atop the latest baseball power rankings from On3.

Weekly record: 3-1 (3-0 in SEC play)

Overall record: 32-7 (12-5)

Previous ranking: No. 1

The week didn’t start off how the top-ranked Tigers wanted it to, losing 8-5 at home against Louisiana on Tuesday. LSU then hit the road for a trip to Ole Miss over the weekend. The series was closer than many truly thought it would be, with LSU sweeping but not winning any game by more than four runs. The Tigers won 7-3 on Friday, 8-4 on Saturday and 7-6 on Sunday to secure the sweep.

LSU returns home on Tuesday for a date with Nicholls, and the Tigers then host Alabama over the weekend in a series beginning on Friday.

The Tigers are in a good position heading down the stretch as they don’t have any remaining conference series against ranked opponents. LSU should remain in the mix to win the conference regular season title until the very end, though it’s clear that the South Carolina team it split with a couple of weeks ago is also a contender.
