LSU gets a bump in On3’s SEC power rankings after perfect opening weekend

The Tigers had a perfect weekend to begin the season, but not every top SEC team can say the same.

It wasn’t pretty at times both offensively and defensively, but LSU baseball weathered the storm in its opening weekend of 2024 to move to 4-0 to begin the year.

Not every team in the SEC can say the same. Both Arkansas and Florida, which ranked above the Tigers in On3’s SEC power rankings entering the season, took a loss this weekend.

As a result, we saw some shakeup in this week’s rankings. While the Razorbacks remained at the top, LSU jumped the Gators, who lost their season-opener and saw the final two games of the weekend rained out.

Here’s what Jonathan Wagner said about coach Jay Johnson’s team.

Weekly Record: 4-0
Overall Record: 4-0
Previous: No. 3 (+1)
Upcoming Week: vs. Northern Illinois (Thursday, Saturday), vs. Stony Brook (Friday, Sunday)

LSU had four games on opening weekend, two against VMI and two against Central Arkansas. The Tigers won an 11-8 game on opening day over VMI, before taking a tight win over Central Arkansas on Saturday, winning 2-0. LSU blew it open against VMI on Sunday, winning 27-5. They then defeated Central Arkansas 5-3 on Monday to finish a 4-0 weekend. The defending national champions have a similar setup this week with Northern Illinois and Stony Brook, although those games will span from Thursday through Sunday.

After a four-game set this weekend, LSU won’t have any midweek games and will return to the field at Alex Box Stadium to host Northern Illinois on Thursday night.
