LSU assistant Cortez Hankton to stay after Rams go in different direction for OC

LSU is keeping its passing game coordinator as the Rams elected to hire Kentucky OC Liam Coen to the same position.

The Los Angeles Rams have made a decision to replace outgoing offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell. The team has hired Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen for the role, meaning Tigers assistant Cortez Hankton, who was also requested to interview for the position, will remain at LSU.

Coen is a former assistant under head coach Sean McVay, so his hiring makes a lot of sense. The news was first reported by Albert Breer.

Hankton signed a three-year deal back in January to be receivers coach and passing game coordinator under new head coach Brian Kelly. He won the College Football Playoffs national championship with Georgia, serving as its passing game coordinator.

Hankton had been with the Bulldogs since 2018. He was a receiver coach before taking over as the passing game coordinator in 2019. Under Hankton, Georgia led the SEC in yards per play and passing efficiency.

Before coaching at Georgia, Hankton coached receivers at Dartmouth and Vanderbilt. With the Bulldogs, Hankton coached Mecole Hardman, Terry Godwin, and Riley Ridley, all three of whom play in the NFL. Another receiver Hankton coached was George Pickens, who is expected to be taken in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Hankton played his college football at Texas Southern. He set career receiving records there and was a two-time All Wac selection. He made it to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. From 2003 to 2006, Hankton played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he caught 34 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Hankton was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster in 2008, but he was injured and did not play with the Buccaneers.
