Lonzo Ball’s blossoming into a key piece of the Pelicans’ young core this season has come through multiple factors. Ball has remained adamant that his health has been the biggest reason. His improved jumper has increased his efficiency from beyond the arc as well but those aren’t the only reasons.
But there have also been non-statistical improvements for Ball. The third-year guard has found a role within the team and within himself. During his appearance on JJ Redick’s podcast on The Ringer, Ball talked about becoming a leader with the Pelicans this season.
“Being more vocal, especially being point guard of the team. I’ve played with guys that Rondo so I’ve seen what it’s supposed to look like. I think that’s the main thing just making sure people are ready to go. Making sure people are in the right spots and leading the ship to victory.”
Ball’s assertiveness and confidence have led to improved play not just for himself but for the Pelicans as a whole. Redick noted after Ball’s answer that, at the start of the season, he considered the Pelicans the quietest team he’d ever been apart of. With a new roster cobbled together over the off-season, players were finding their roles within the team.
But Ball has stepped into the role of a vocal leader, a role he did not need to take with the Lakers in the last two seasons. As one of the leaders of the team in recent weeks and months, the Pelicans have excelled, holding the ninth-best net rating in the league since Feb. 1.
It’s yet another example of Ball excelling on the court this season with New Orleans and another reason for optimism for Ball’s future with the Pelicans.
