Liverpool conceded some comically bad goals at Napoli

It was a defensive disasterclass for the Reds

Liverpool’s defense has been one of its strengths in recent years as the club developed into one of one of the best in Europe.

But Liverpool went to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night and provided ample evidence that those days could be in the past.

It wasn’t just that Napoli scored four times in a convincing 4-1 victory, it was the nature of the Italian side’s goals that must have been especially worrying to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Like, for example, Napoli’s second goal, when Joe Gomez turned the ball over and, later in the same sequence, simply watched André-Frank Zambo Anguissa ghost past him on a one-two to finish past Alisson.

Or consider Napoli’s third goal, in which Trent Alexander-Arnold continued his recent trend of not trying very hard, Gomez again let his marker past him too easily, and Virgil van Dijk was completely static as Giovanni Simeone tapped home from close range.

And then there was Napoli’s fourth, with the Italians taking advantage of Liverpool’s high line with a simple ball over the top for Piotr Zieliński to eventually finish.

Woof.

Liverpool has only won two of its opening six Premier League games this season, and that form has apparently made its way to Europe as well. If they don’t sort out their back line, it could be a long season for Klopp’s men.
