With pick No. 166 of the 2020 NFL Draft, the 20th pick in the fifth round, the Lions select Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus.
Cephus managed to salvage a bad NFL Combine with an average Pro Day, but running a 4.62 40-yard-dash (4.73 at Combine) makes it really difficult to survive in the NFL as a receiver. His above-average explosion numbers translate to the field, as do his poor agility numbers.
Cephus has plus ball skills, can beat press coverage with his physicality, but it’s hard to see him doing more than running routes over the middle of the field as he lacks long speed.
Because of his poor long speed, positive production on the field, and excellent body control, he has been compared to Anquan Boldin and James Jones — though those seems like a lofty comparison. Cephus also more than one red flag that the Lions surely (hopefully) looked into.
The Lions have the following picks remaining:
Round 5 | pick 26 | 172 overall |
Round 6 | pick 20 | 197 overall |
Round 7 | pick 21 | 235 overall |
