After opening the week listed as an underdog against Michigan State this weekend in East Lansing, Penn State is now looking to make the trip as a favorite. What a week it has been.
The line for this weekend’s regular-season finale between Penn State and Michigan State has been tight all week long. According to Tipico, Penn State opened the week as a 1.5-point underdog against the Spartans. But on the Friday before the game, the Nittany Lions are listed as a 1.5-point favorite for the game.
The biggest reason for the swing in the line may be based on the opportunity Penn State has to do some damage against the nation’s worst pass defense. Michigan State ranks 130th out of 130 FBS programs against the pass, and Ohio State and Purdue recently capitalized on that in Michigan State’s two losses. Penn State is expected to have starting quarterback Sean Clifford back and healthy for the game, and he certainly has the receivers to make some plays with Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington as a lethal combo.
The fact the line opened as close as it did was probably telling. Michigan State has had a by-far better season but the cracks in their team have been exploited in a big way. While Penn State’s season hasn’t gone as they’d like, their losses have been hard-fought close calls as well. And with Penn State’s defense, this weekend’s game was never expected to be a blowout either way.
And the updated line sticks to that concept.
