Lincoln Riley is encouraged by Malachi Nelson’s progress in USC camp

Lincoln Riley was direct in noting how much progress Malachi Nelson is making on the practice field.

Malachi Nelson did not look good in the USC football spring game. It was natural to worry if the highly-touted recruit had been oversold. There is always a lingering concern that an elite recruit at an important position will be a bust. It does happen. It will happen. It is part of the sport and part of the industry.

Should USC fans have been especially concerned about a freshman struggling in a spring game? No, not really. Yet, the thought certainly entered the back of everyone’s mind. Therefore, expunging those worries was important for USC fans and, much more importantly, for Nelson himself and USC head coach Lincoln Riley.

Good news, everyone. Riley said on Monday that Nelson is “progressing much, much better” at USC preseason camp. Riley told 247Sports that “Physically, it’s been a 180. I would say even mentally too. It was great for him to get the reps during spring.”

We can all calm down now.
