Serie A side Lazio has been a mainstay in the Europa League in recent years, but the 2021 campaign couldn’t have gotten off to a more embarrassing start for The Eagles.
Goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha had the start for Thursday’s Group E opener at Galatasaray in Istanbul, and for much of the match, Strakosha looked poised to have Lazio leave Turkey with a hard-earned point and clean sheet.
That all fell apart in the 66th minute with perhaps the worst own goal you’ll see in high-level European soccer.
About midway through the second half, Olimpiu Vasile Morutan sent an innocent cross into the box with no Galatasaray players around for support. At the very worst, it should have been a conceded corner with Strakosha tapping the ball over the bar. But, uh, that went horribly wrong.
