The Lady Vols entered Wednesday’s Southeastern Conference contest against Mississippi State having won four consecutive league series.
That streak came to an end as No. 15 Tennessee was swept in a doubleheader at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.
The Bulldogs (29-22, 5-15 SEC) edged the Lady Vols, 2-1, in the opener. Mississippi State prevailed, 6-2, in the nightcap.
The first game of the afternoon was scoreless until Mississippi State produced a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Tennessee (38-10, 11-9 SEC) scored its lone run of the contest when Amanda Ayala’s double plated Anna Fox.
Tennessee out-hit the Bulldogs, 6-4, and had three doubles in the game as Ally Shipman and Madison Webber came up with extra-base hits.
In the nightcap, Mississippi State wasted little time pouncing on the Lady Vols as it scored six runs in the opening frame.
Tennessee plated a run in the second when Webber had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kiki Milloy.
The Lady Vols pulled to within 6-2 in the top of the third when Ashley Morgan’s RBI double drove in Ayala.
Milloy Morgan and Ivy Davis each had two hits in the nightcap.
