Lady Vols swept by Mississippi State

Mississippi State sweeps softball doubleheader against Lady Vols.

The Lady Vols entered Wednesday’s Southeastern Conference contest against Mississippi State having won four consecutive league series.

That streak came to an end as No. 15 Tennessee was swept in a doubleheader at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Bulldogs (29-22, 5-15 SEC) edged the Lady Vols, 2-1, in the opener. Mississippi State prevailed, 6-2, in the nightcap.

The first game of the afternoon was scoreless until Mississippi State produced a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tennessee (38-10, 11-9 SEC) scored its lone run of the contest when Amanda Ayala’s double plated Anna Fox.

Tennessee out-hit the Bulldogs, 6-4, and had three doubles in the game as Ally Shipman and Madison Webber came up with extra-base hits.

In the nightcap, Mississippi State wasted little time pouncing on the Lady Vols as it scored six runs in the opening frame.

Tennessee plated a run in the second when Webber had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kiki Milloy.

The Lady Vols pulled to within 6-2 in the top of the third when Ashley Morgan’s RBI double drove in Ayala.

Milloy Morgan and Ivy Davis each had two hits in the nightcap.
