Lady Vols sweep Tennessee State

Recapping UT’s sweep of Tennessee State on the diamond Wednesday.

Pitching carried the Lady Vols to a doubleheader sweep over Tennessee State Wednesday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Tennessee, ranked 16th in the nation, nabbed a pair of victory over the Tigers, claiming the opener 2-1 and posting a 3-0 shutout in the night cap.

Hits came at a premium for the Lady Vols all day, but Tennessee was opportunistic in both contests.

In the first game, UT managed just six hits, including a solo home run from Ivy Davis in the bottom of the fourth inning, which provided the winning margin.

The Lady Vols opened a 1-0 lead in the first when a groundout by Chelsea Seggern plated Kiki Milloy.

Milloy went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored.

In the circle, Tennessee used three pitchers. Samantha Bender started and went two innings. She gave up three hits and struck out one.

Callie Turner picked up the win in relief, surrendering an unearned run, one hit and one walk. With the win, she improved to 7-1 on the season.

Ashley Rogers recorded her second save of the season, striking out all six Tennessee hitters she faced.

The Tigers tied the game with an unearned run in the third.

In game two, Rogers (18-4) and Bailey McCachren combined for a one-hit shutout.

Rogers gave up one run, one hit and one walk, while striking out 12 in 6.2 innings.

McCachren walked one hitter before recording the final out of the game against the Tigers (8-24).

Tennessee (31-6) scored all three of its runs in the first inning as Milloy stole third base and came home on an error.

Ashley Morgan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Rylie West scored when Madison Webber reached on a fielder’s choice.

West went 1-for-3 with a double.
