An overtime goal by Brooke Wilson propelled Tennessee to its first Southeastern Conference victory of the 2021 season Thursday night.
Wilson scored her fourth marker of the campaign in the 101st minute of the No. 17 Lady Vols’ 2-1 victory over No. 11 Auburn before an announced crowd of 830 at Regal Soccer Stadium.
It was Tennessee’s first win over the Tigers (7-2-0, 1-1-0 SEC) in the last nine matches between the two schools. The Lady Vols (8-1-0, 1-1-0 SEC) had to come back and force overtime in the matchup.
After the two teams trudged through a scoreless first half, Auburn took a 1-0 lead when Marissa Arias tallied in the 70th minute.
The Lady Vols, who outshot the Tigers, 19-14, and had eight corner kicks in the match, and pulled even when Taylor Huff recorded her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Lawson Renie.
The match remained tied until early in the second overtime period when Wilson scored the game-winner, her fourth marker of the season.
Mackenzie George and Jordan Fusco were each credited with an assist on the game’s final tally.
Tennessee goalkeeper Lindsey Romig totaled five saves, including a point-blank stop against Auburn’s Sydney Richards in the 64th minute.
