There’s no denying that the most entertaining part of the Chicago Bears’ offseason has been the quarterback search that has spanned the course of a couple of months and several high-profile players.

While players like Matthew Stafford and Carson Wentz have found new homes, the Bears continue to search for the team’s first true franchise quarterback during a year where general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy could well be on their way out if Chicago finished 8-8 again.

Which is why you’d expect a big splash from the Bears at quarterback this offseason. Two of the names having been floated around include Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Houston’s Deshaun Watson, both players who are currently not on the trade block, according to their respective franchises.

Good Morning Football‘s Kyle Brandt believes that the Bears are going to do “something that shocks us” in regards to the quarterback position.

“I think it could be something insane,” he said.

While there are some free-agent options out there, including recently-released Alex Smith, Brandt believes it’s going to be a big name that Chicago targets.

“I don’t think the Bears quarterback is going to be the low-hanging fruit,” Brandt said. “I don’t think it was ever going to be Carson Wentz, I don’t think it’s going to be Alex Smith, it’s not going to be Mitch, it’s not going to be Foles. I think it’s going to be something that shocks us in a way that J.J. Watt going to the Cardinals shocked us. I don’t think people are tweeting about it. I think it could be something insane.

“The things that are being thrown around right now— Atlanta has the No. 4 pick, are they taking a quarterback? If so, what are they doing with Matt Ryan? The Las Vegas Raiders, not just one of their quarterbacks, both of them (Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota). I think when we’re sitting here and we find out who the Bears quarterback is going to be, I don’t think it’s going to be, ‘Oh yeah, it was the one we’re talking about.’ I think it’s going to be a shocker, and I think they winked at that yesterday.”

While Pace has said “everything is on the table” in regards to the quarterback position, it’s hard to believe that Chicago would go back to Nick Foles or re-sign Mitchell Trubisky with Pace and Nagy’s jobs on the line in 2021.

The Bears’ top two targets aren’t even available right now, which could certainly complicate matters heading into free agency and the NFL draft. If they can’t trade for someone like Wilson or Watson by the draft, do they trade up to select their guy?

One thing’s certain: The quarterback drama has only just begun.
