The defense is the heartbeat of the New Orleans Saints, and if that wasn’t clear enough the group of players leading the team’s pregame huddle illustrates it. Demario Davis had handled those rah-rah duties for a while, ever since Drew Brees first missed time with injuries before his retirement, and he’s now been joined by vocal leaders Kwon Alexander and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Alexander hasn’t been activated from injured reserve yet after hurting his elbow earlier this season, but he’s one of several starters expected to return after the team’s Week 6 bye; his backup, rookie draft pick Pete Werner, has played well in his absence but there’s no substituting the athleticism and playmaking ability Alexander brings to the table. And, of course, his experience and leadership.
