Kirk Ferentz not surprised, just disappointed in Big Ten coach firings

Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz has been at the helm 1999 with stability, but is disappointed how other programs have treated coaches.

Kirk Ferentz has been the model of stability at the head coaching position in college football. Since 1999, he has lead the Iowa Hawkeyes as their head coach and see really no instability at all. Kirk’s seat has never really been hot or questioned as the head man.

The same cannot be said for other programs in the Big Ten and across the country. Just shy of six weeks into the season, there are five Power 5 head coaching job openings and two of those sit within the Big Ten.

Those openings are at premier programs with funding, support, and the lifeline to be successful. Scott Frost was shown his way out of Nebraska after an underwhelming tenure while Wisconsin had a quick trigger letting go of Paul Chryst, their third-winningest coach in history.

In his weekly press conference, Ferentz was asked his thoughts regarding the nature of these firings and his thoughts on it.

“No, not at all. Disappointed but not surprised. I think it’s the fifth one this season, right? The toll has mounted. Ball kind of got rolling last year. The one big one I remember was USC the second week of the year, and my question would be if it’s that bad, why didn’t you do it a year ago or a half year ago.

“But that’s the world we’re living in right now. I’m not surprised but disappointed,” Ferentz discussed when asked if the amount of coaching changes this early in the season surprises him.

When asked specifically about Paul Chryst’s firing, Ferentz once again stated he was surprised by it, but not shocked as that firing is an example of the ever-changing world of college football.

“That was surprising to me. We’re living in different times now, operating in a different world, and we live in a very reactionary world, too, right now. That’s obvious,” Ferentz said.

Iowa has always been consistent with Ferentz due to his consistency on the field and there is no change coming within the head coaching position at Iowa. Kirk Ferentz has won games, done everything the right way, developed loads of NFL talent, but also developed even more teenagers into great young men.
