On Wednesday, Georgia coach Kirby Smart officially confirmed that Will Muschamp will be joining the Bulldogs as a defensive analyst for the 2021 season.
Muschamp, who played his college back at Georgia with Smart, most recently spent five years as head coach at South Carolina and before that was head coach of the Gators. He spent a year as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in between.
Muschamp will earn $300,000 with Georgia this season, and Smart outlined what exactly Muschamp will be doing to earn that salary.
“He’s already made a lot of strides in terms of helping me [and] helping our staff,” Smart said, per DawgNation. “He’ll be able to help coach the coaches, and he’ll be working with the defensive side of the ball. It’s very helpful to have a guy who has been a head coach at two places in our conference.”
Despite what his head coaching record shows, Muschamp always knew how to coach a defense, and will be a very valuable asset to the Bulldogs this season.
The secondary, in particular, is a position of focus for Smart this offseason, as Georgia sees a lot of turnover at the position coming into next year, including defensive back coach Charlton Warren, who left for Indiana and was replaced by Jahmile Addae.
“It’s a position that needs to be developed, we have some guys that we’ve been developing that need to step up and play,” Smart said of the secondary. “We’ve also got some young guys that we’ve signed that we just talked about that will have to grow quickly and will get an opportunity to compete for position.”
