The Arizona Cardinals announced Monday they used the transition tag on running back Kenyan Drake. Based on estimations from Over the Cap, that was expected to pay him roughly $10.1 million dollars.

It will not pay him that much.

According to SI’s Albert Breer, the transition tag for running backs is about $8.5 million.

In agreeing to trade David Johnson to the Houston Texans, $8.1 million in cap space is freed up. Drake essentially replaces Johnson’s cap hit currently.

It isn’t ideal to have that much tied up at running back, but in this situation, if a long-term deal is not agreed upon, the Cardinals essentially replaced Johnson with Drake without taking on more salary cap.
