The San Antonio Spurs have been dealing with a ton of losing this season. Despite the presence of Victor Wembanyama, they just haven’t been able to get in the win column as often as they’d like. They currently sit at 5-30 on the year, and three of their wins were in the first couple of weeks of the season.
Wembanyama has been putting together a great rookie campaign, but some of the pieces around him have been solid, too. More than anyone, Devin Vassell has turned into an absolute star. He looks like he has the potential to be a perfect co-star next to Wembanyama moving forward.
Vassell recently poured in his second 30-point game of the season in the Spurs’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Keldon Johnson praised Vassell for his play, but he wasn’t surprised.
“I know I say this every time,” Johnson said via Matt Guzman of Inside the Spurs. “But it does not surprise me when Devin makes shots because Devin is one of the hardest workers I know. I can do nothing but smile because I know he is putting in the hard work to be successful.”
In addition, head coach Gregg Popovich showed love to Vassell.
“He was spectacular,” Popovich said of his performance against the Spurs. “His aggressiveness is what we have been looking for. We tried to kind of convince him that he sells himself short if he just thinks of himself as a shooter. He has so much more.”
Vassell has been awesome this year, and Spurs fans should he excited to have him around heading into the future.
