Kadarius Toney’s Giants career begins with odd shoe saga

The start to Kadarius Toney’s New York Giants career did not exactly go as planned, but he persevered and battled through adversity.

When things don’t go as planned, you can’t shut down and pity yourself… Instead, you improvise, adapt and overcome, which is exactly what New York Giants rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney did on Friday.

As rookie minicamp got underway, Toney immediately ran into a problem. Or, perhaps more accurately, he ran out of his shoe and into a problem.

During some early drills, Toney appeared to have injured his right foot/ankle, but it turned out to be little more than a cleat issue.

“You know what, first day on the field I think there’s a little bit of equipment issue. We have to get that straightened out and make sure our guys hit the field with equipment they are comfortable with. We’ll handle that; make sure it’s not an issue going forward,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters after practice.

“I think just the wrong size. They figuring that out right now,” Toney said. “I ended up getting it eventually.”

As the issue was sorted out, Toney decided to continue pressing forward…shoeless.

The issue did eventually catch up with Toney and he missed the final sprints for “precautionary reasons.”

“I do whatever it takes, you know what I’m saying. I do whatever it takes,” Toney said. “It’s just me. It’s that dog mentality.”

The Giants and Toney will return to the field on Saturday afternoon just before the 3 o’clock hour and he’s likely to have a new pair of form-fitting cleats this time around.
