Julian Love will take over as Giants’ defensive signal-caller

With Xavier McKinney out a month (or more), Julian Love will take over as the New York Giants’ defensive signal caller.

With safety Xavier McKinney out for the next four weeks (and beyond) due to his unfortunate off-field injury, the New York Giants will have veteran Julian Love donning the ‘green dot’ on his helmet and calling the defensive signals in McKinney’s absence.

“He will. Julian will have it,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters of the green dot on Tuesday.

The ‘green dot’ indicates the helmet contains the radio apparatus used to communicate between coaches and players pre-snap. For Love, that will begin this Sunday when the Giants host the Houston Texans at MetLife Stadium.

McKinney had not missed a snap this season, playing all 506 defensive snaps for Big Blue and has not missed a snap since Week 3 of last season — the longest such streak in the NFL (1,432).

In McKinney’s absence, Love will be paired with rookie Dane Belton and free agent Jason Pinnock. Landon Collins is also expected to be signed or elevated from the practice squad.
