There is a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of quarterback Josh Allen and linebacker Terrel Bernard as the Buffalo Bills inch toward their first game of the 2024 NFL season.
Not that they aren’t used to that, but it has kicked up a notch.
Allen was once again named a team captain for the 2024 Bills. Bernard, as the leader and play caller on defense, earned that honor for the first time in his career this week.
And that’s it. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott named eight captains last year but it’s only the pair for 2024.
Reflecting on that, both players said they understand the importance of that added pressure.
“It’s a huge honor,” Allen said.
“I don’t take it lightly,” Bernard added.
McDermott did note that there will be a 10 player “leadership council” alongside the two captains this season. That will likely include someone such as pass rusher Von Miller, who was a full captain himself last year.
Still, there are only two players with the letter “C” on their chest and Allen and Bernard recognize that.
