Bills quarterback Josh Allen is ready to talk extension with the team at any time. Heck, he’d do so tomorrow.
On Wednesday, Allen appeared on the The Ringer’s “10 Questions” podcast with Kyle Brandt. The interview covered a wide-array of topics both on and off the field. Naturally the biggest Allen-related topic came up: His potential extension with the team.
So far this offseason, Buffalo general manage Brandon Beane has referenced that an extension with the QB might not come about until later on after free agency and the draft.
“Right now, we’ll focus on our upcoming free agents, plus anybody we want to add, and then the draft,” Beane said in early March. “Generally, what I’ve done here is look at guys to extend once we get through the draft, see what our money is like, see how we could structure it to fit not only this year, but the years beyond.”
However, the 2021 event is slowly approaching at the end of the month… which means that time frame for an Allen extension which Beane has referenced is also nearing.
But Allen himself doesn’t worry much about the draft. That’s Beane’s job. Allen is in offseason mode now. Yes, he’s working out and practicing, but Allen doesn’t have such big events on his schedule and because of that, he’d be ready to talk ASAP.
“There’s a lot of different ways you can go about it. Honestly, like I love playing football… If we can get to something soon, I’d obviously love to be locked down in Buffalo for a very long time. It’s a place that I call home. I love being there, I love the fan base, I love the city, it’s everything I want.”
“If they called up and wanted to talk tomorrow, I’d be willing,” he added.
While Beane did say the two sides could start talking this offseason, he did also mention that nothing is guaranteed. Buffalo has Allen under contract through 2022 once his fifth-year option is flexed on his rookie contract.
It appears both sides are ready and willing to get a deal done sooner rather than later. Allen also notably would like to take that route instead of having it come down to something drastic like the franchise tag.
Allen’s response to the idea of being tagged in the future:
“Ew.”
The 24-year-old said he even plans to get involved and be engaged in contract talks whenever they happen. He’s that motivated to sign on the dotted line.
