Jon Gruden loves calling the Raiders’ Vegas stadium the ‘Death Star,’ ignores ‘Star Wars’

Seems like a bad idea!

Look: if you’re going to nickname a super-cool thing like Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas the “Death Star” (and not, say, the Giant Roomba), you have to know the jokes are coming.

After all, that was the name of a very large space station in Star Wars that could blow up planets but was also taken down TWICE and blown to smithereens by much smaller Rebel ships.

That apparently doesn’t matter to Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.

“I think it’s a cool name for our stadium,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I don’t give a damn about Star Wars. That’s what we’re calling our stadium and I don’t care what anybody else thinks. It’s a cool stadium, it’s a great name and we just have to play good when we’re in there.”

Uh-oh. Maybe not the best idea to say you don’t give a damn about Star Wars. But this is hilarious! And owner Mark Davis is in on it!

They’re all missing the point here. You call it the “Death Star,” you’re opening yourselves up to a world of jokes, which doesn’t help a franchise that’s been joked about for a long time.

So good.
