John Michael Schmitz anxious to work against Dexter Lawrence

New York Giants rookie center John Michael Schmitz is looking forward to his practice battles with All-Pro nose tackle Dexter Lawrence.

The New York Giants were delighted to see center John Michael Schmitz fall to them in the second round of this year’s draft after many had him as a first-round talent. In fact, plenty of mock drafts had JMS going to the Giants at 25th overall leading up to the draft.

The Giants’ newest center has a detailed plan for earning the respect of his new teammates. And what better way to do just that than by going toe-to-toe with the team’s best defensive player, Dexter Lawrence?

It’s something JMS looks forward to.

“Yeah, looking to just continue to get better each and every day against him. Being able to compete against one of the best there is. Tremendous opportunity to have that,” Schmitz told reporters on Saturday.

“He’s a great player. Great player, tremendous person, and can’t wait to grow closer with him and compete.”

Referring to Lawrence as ‘one of the best there is’ certainly is high praise for Big Dex, who took a massive leap in 2022 to solidify himself among the league’s best defensive linemen.

JMS is joining a young group of offensive linemen who will have to battle a talented defensive line in practice made up of Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Azeez Ojulari, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Going up against Lawrence and Williams in practice is going to be a great learning experience for JMS and likely one leaving him thankful that Lawrence is a teammate and not an opponent.
