John Elway on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: ‘He’s the best football player in the league’

Broncos GM John Elway was asked some questions about Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes during his Tuesday press conference.

Denver Broncos President of Football Operations and GM John Elway spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon. Toward the end of his press conference, Elway was asked a two-part question about Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. First, he was asked about Mahomes becoming a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals. Second, he was asked about his contract extension with Chiefs.

“Well, first of all, I hope they hire him in the front office,” Elway said of Mahomes becoming part-owner of the Royals. “He can spend half his time over there with the Royals. That’s fine with me too. Let him spend all his time over there.”

Elway was drafted by the Royals in the 19th round of the 1979 MLB Draft when he was just finishing high school. He ultimately decided against playing for the Royals and went to Stanford to play football and baseball. He’d be drafted by the Broncos in the 1983 NFL Draft with the first overall pick and go on to torture Kansas City for many years.

Now the Chiefs have Mahomes exacting some poetic revenge against Elway. In fact, Elway agrees with many that Mahomes is currently the best football player in the NFL.

“Obviously, with his contract, he’s the best football player in the league,” Elway said of Mahomes. “You know, I think it’s a well-deserved contract with the way he’s played his first three years — or two years as a starter. What he’s done, he’s a guy that represents the league very, very well, and a tremendous player. I’m happy with the fact he got that contract and as an opponent in the AFC West — I wish he’d have got more. I think they underpaid him.”

The Broncos have lost the last nine games they’ve played against the Chiefs, During that span, Kansas City has outscored Denver by an average of 17 points. They hope to end that streak in 2020, but it’ll be tough as they face a Chiefs quarterback who is in Elway’s words, “the best football player in the league.”
