The Joey Gatewood era at Kentucky might begin this weekend.
Per Mark Stoops on the weekly SEC Coaches Teleconference, starting quarterback Terry Wilson is still suffering from an injury. Wilson has missed at least two days of practice so far this week.
It would be a big chance for Gatewood who transferred from Auburn in the middle of last season after getting beat out by Bo Nix for the starting job but it would come against one of the top defenses in the nation. The Bulldogs ranked 20th in the FBS in total defense, allowing just 318.5 yards per game. That number is inflated by the performance put up by Alabama against Georgia. In their first three games, the Dawgs defense allowed just 198.3 total yards per game.
Gatewood has seen some action so far this season including coming into the game last week against Missouri as Wilson was unproductive. The Wildcats threw for just 50 yards in the 20-10 loss.
Out of Jacksonville, the 6-foot-4 Gatewood was a 4-star recruit and the No. 1 athlete in the 2018 signing class, per 247Sports.
