The Boston Celtics have unexpectedly welcomed former NBA head coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy to their team as a senior consultant for the 2023-24 season, with Van Gundy set to split his time helping to advise not only the Celtics’ organization at the NBA level but also the Maine Celtics at the G League level.
Commenting on this addition to his franchise, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla remarked to the media at practice that he felt the hire was, “awesome” for the team a season after Mazzulla struggled in terms of assistant coaching depth as the team made a deep playoff push under a then-first year head coach.
“Any time you get to add like high character, high level, professional people, I think it’s a no brainer and so fortunate enough that he’s here, not just for the coaching staff, but for everybody,” he added.
Reporter Bobby Manning from CLNS Media shared his thoughts on this new inclusion after the Celtics’ practice at Auerbach Center on Friday; check it out above!
