Joe Judge wants Giants to be a run first team

While speaking to reporters at the Senior Bowl, Joe Judge reiterated his desire for the New York Giants to be a run first football team.

When the New York Giants introduced Joe Judge as their next head coach, one of the first things he mentioned was his desire to see the team become a physical, fundamentally-sound unit that prides itself on punching the opponent in the mouth for a full 60 minutes.

With the hiring of Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator, Judge took the first step in that direction, all but ensuring that Saquon Barkley gets used in much the same way Ezekiel Elliott has been used in Dallas.

While meeting with reporters at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Judge reiterated that desire and made it abundantly clear he want the Giants to be a run first team.

“The first thing we want to be able to do is run the ball,” Judge said, via NJ Advance Media. “[Garrett ran the ball] successfully in Dallas throughout his career. Jason brings with him a lot of experience in a lot of systems. We want to create a player-friendly system that creates multiples within gameplans.”

Outside of running the football, Judge also saw the potential value Garrett will bring to the development of quarterback Daniel Jones.

“Someone who has worked with several successfully quarterbacks and developed them over time, who has a vast knowledge himself as a player in this league, under different coordinators, different systems, and with great players, that’s something that’s going to add something to this offense,” Judge said.

Garrett to the Giants seems like a perfect match and exactly what Judge was looking for offensively, but there remains one glaring concern… As we at Giants Wire pondered previously, what if Garrett up and leaves after one season?

No worries, says Judge. If Garrett lands a job as a head coach, it means the Giants must have been excelling offensively.

“Look, I hope everybody on our staff has options to advance their career at some point,” Judge said. “That means business is good. We want our coaches to be wanted by other people, that means we’re doing a good job. I’m very lucky to have all three coordinators in the building.”
