The New York Giants are banking heavily on last year’s top draft pick, quarterback Daniel Jones, taking huge step forward this season. With an improved offensive line and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett calling the plays, it’s almost a given that Jones will be improved in Year 2.
Joe Judge, the Giants’ first year head coach, will be charged with turning this listing franchise around and get it back into contention. Having coached under Nick Saban and Bill Belichick, Judge knows the way and when it comes to quarterbacks, he hopes to instill in Jones what he’s gleaned from the GOAT, six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady.
“The biggest thing I ever observed from Tom in my eight years with him was that his preparation was phenomenal, but his accountability is what really separated him from a lot of other players,” Judge said in a recent interview with SNY. “His stature in the league was such that he could’ve just taken that role of superstar, but he always came in every day, put his nose the grindstone and just worked tirelessly. That, to me, is something I’ll always take away from being with Tom for those eight years.”
Judge believes the intelligent and mature Jones can take the next step in his career and in his short time as head coach is impressed with Jones’ character and approach to the job.
“If you ask me about his personality in meetings and how he comes prepared and the leadership he’s demonstrating, I’ve been very pleased and very encouraged with all that,” Judge said. “He obviously has a love for football that’s contagious to the guys around him. He comes very prepared. He’s a hard worker. He’s a guy who’s a team-first guy. And that’s stuff that you need at that position.”
Jones had a roller coaster of a rookie season in 2019, throwing 24 touchdowns in 12 starts, but tossed 12 interception and lost 11 fumbles.
