Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow isn’t letting an odd rookie offseason stop him from assuming a leadership role.

That leadership role includes his desire to start directing Bengals workouts this offseason.

Bengals safety Jessie Bates revealed this detail on the RapSheet + Friends podcast with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: “He’s so excited to get things started that he wants to run 7-on-7s himself. That’s his mindset.”

It’s a small — but insightful — look into Burrow’s mindset as he heads into his rookie season. He spent the draft process telling anyone who would listen he’s only focused on being the best rookie he can be — not proving himself via testing numbers. Since being drafted, he’s told the world he wants to hire a chef, get in better shape and has already been linking up with Bengals coaches about the playbook.

The next natural step is setting up workouts, which is trickier than it sounds given the current restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This admission from Bates isn’t a stunner — A.J. Green already revealed he told Burrow to name the time and place and Bengals wideouts would come.

While we’ll have to wait and see on the details of a workout given the global circumstances, it’s clear Burrow’s approach has already turned some heads with some big names in the locker room.
