Jets ink Breshad Perriman hours after losing Robby Anderson

It didn’t take the Jets long to find Robby Anderson’s replacement.

Hours after the speedster signed a two-year deal with Carolina, New York reached a one-year agreement with Buccaneers free agent Breshad Perriman. The 26-year-old will get a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He will get $6 million guaranteed.

Perriman’s pact follows the trend of contracts being handed out by Joe Douglas this offseason. The first-year general manager has been giving out a combination of short-term and financially flexible contracts. Perriman, after a career year in Tampa Bay, is no exception despite Douglas’ sudden need to replace Gang Green’s top receiver.

Perriman was drafted 26th overall by the Ravens in 2015, but he didn’t exactly live up to the hype in Baltimore. He lasted just two seasons there, recording 43 catches, 576 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games. He only started four of those contests.

Things didn’t get any better for Perriman in 2018 when he made a pitstop with Cleveland, but the Bucs took a flier on him last season and it paid off. Playing alongside a talented group of receivers, Perriman caught 36 passes for 645 yards and six touchdowns, all personal bests. He also played a career-high 57 percent of offensive snaps.

Now, if you’re thinking none of those numbers are those of a No. 1 receiver, you’re correct. Anderson was a fringe No. 1 at his best, and Perriman is far from one despite entering the league with such expectations. However, Perriman is fast like Anderson and should help the Jets maintain a downfield presence.

Still, Douglas has more work to do when it comes to his receiver room. Jamison Crowder and Quincy Enunwa are the only other experienced receivers on the roster right now, and both are best used in the slot. Enunwa is coming off of season-ending neck surgery.

With all that in mind, expect the Jets to add more pass-catchers, especially when April’s deep receiver draft comes around.
