Jets injury report: Sam Darnold out vs. Chargers, Mekhi Becton ‘good to go’

The Jets will be without Sam Darnold in their Week 11 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, but Mekhi Becton will return to the lineup.

Adam Gase announced Monday that Sam Darnold will be out against the Chargers in Week 11. Joe Flacco will start in Darnold’s place for the second consecutive week.

Gase said it was a “consensus” decision not to start Darnold this week, a decision that included doctors in and out of the building, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. The Jets have not yet discussed placing Darnold on injured reserve, but neither Gase nor Darnold seemed overly optimistic about the quarterback’s chances of returning in Week 12.

There’s no timetable on when Darnold will be able to start a throwing program.

Darnold said that based on what he was told by doctors, it was still the right decision to play against the Chiefs in Week 8. He said he made a mistake not sliding on the hit he took in New York’s 35-9 loss, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.

As for other injuries, Mekhi Becton, who left Week 9’s loss with a chest injury, appears “good to go” for Sunday’s game. The hope for Quinnen Williams (hamstring) is that he will be limited in practice this week after missing New York’s previous game against the Patriots.
