Jay Johnson addresses Paul Skenes’ availability ahead of winner-take-all CWS matchup against Wake Forest

Neither coach would confirm it, but a battle between Skenes and Rhett Lowder seems likely on Thursday night.

LSU overcame the odds to beat No. 1 Wake Forest on Wednesday night, winning its second straight bullpen game to avoid elimination at the College World Series in Omaha.

Now, the Tigers will face off against the Demon Deacons again Thursday night with a spot in the CWS final on the line. Though neither coach has outright confirmed it, we expect this to be a battle between aces with two of the best pitchers in the country on the mound in [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] against Wake’s Rhett Lowder.

After the 5-2 win on Wednesday night, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] remained tight-lipped about whether Skenes will be available. He last pitched in Saturday night’s opening victory over Tennessee.

“We’ll talk to (Skenes) tonight,” Johnson said, according to On3. “I think it’s a day-by-day deal. We have a pre-throw process that we go through with pitchers and their availability and testing and recovery and all of those types of things. So we still need to go through that tomorrow before we make any decision.”

Wake Forest coach Tom Walter is also neglecting to name a starter heading into the game, per On3, though we expect to see another top 2023 MLB draft prospect in Lowder.
